Last week I asked how many of you track the reports that shape the job market. Almost nobody does, and I get it. They’re scattered across government sites, written in economist-speak, and buried in PDFs longer than anyone wants to read.

The catch is those reports decide everything. Which industries are growing. Which ones are slowing down. Which skills are worth betting on. If you’re not looking at them, you’re basically making career choices with a blindfold on.

Here’s the idea. What if there was a simple way to keep up without touching a single PDF? A plain English digest that just tells you three things: what changed, why you should care, and what to watch next. Think of it as the job market explained like you’re five.

I’m thinking of testing it as a two-issue pilot each month, tied to when the most important reports drop.

  • Start of the month: The big picture after the Jobs Report. Are companies hiring or freezing? What’s happening with wages and inflation?

  • Mid-month: The on-the-ground view once the government releases data on job openings, quits, and layoffs. Where are companies still hiring? Which industries are losing ground? How confident are workers to leave their jobs?

On top of the data, I’d add my own commentary on what it means for your real decisions. Should you still consider grad school if layoffs are spiking? Is it worth picking up a new skill if demand looks flat?

And I’d pull in your questions, too. Things like: “Is marketing still a good field to enter?” or “If healthcare is growing, what roles are safest from AI?”

Through GradSimple, I interview someone new every week about their career. That gives me a ground-level view of how people are navigating work, paired with the labor market signals hidden in all these reports. Put together, it’s the kind of context that helps you make decisions you won’t regret.

If enough of you want this, I’ll run a pilot.
