Making friends after college is tough, we won’t sugarcoat it. It’s kinda hard during college too, but you have classes, clubs, parties, and events that allow you room to meet and greet others. As working adults, those opportunities get slashed in half, and let’s be honest, a lot of us are exhausted after work and just want to lay on the couch and scroll on TikTok.

Don’t despair, because we’re here to tell you that all is not lost. With the right approach (and a little effort), it’s entirely possible to meet new people. You don’t have to watch Netflix alone!

Why Is Making Friends After College So Hard?

You’re chillin’ in the library with study buddies, you’re surrounded by people on the quad, you’re sitting next to people in class and strike up a conversation. It’s easy, right? Comparatively speaking, yes, but after graduation, your social landscape will change dramatically.

  1. Structured Social Settings in College: College offers built-in social settings like dorms, clubs, and classes, where meeting new people is almost effortless. This isn’t necessarily translated to post-grad life.
  2. Transition to Working Life: After college, most people shift their focus to their careers. Work environments often don’t prioritize forming deep, genuine social connections.
  3. Geographic Mobility: Many graduates move to new cities (or even countries) for jobs or other opportunities, often far from their established social circles.
  4. Different Life Stages: Some people might start families, others may pursue further education, while others dive into their careers.

Tips and Tricks for Making Friends After College

We know it’s scary to meet new people! Especially other adults, that’s super, super scary. Don’t worry, though. Let’s talk strategy.

  1. Leverage Your Existing Network: Start by reconnecting with old friends or acquaintances. Reach out to college friends who live nearby, or join alumni networks that host events or meetups.
  2. Engage in Hobbies: Join clubs, classes, or groups related to your interests. Whether it’s a local sports league, a book club, or a cooking class, these activities naturally bring together people who share your hobbies.
  3. Be Open to New Experiences: Attend community events and networking functions, even if they push you out of your comfort zone.
  4. Utilize Online Platforms: Try apps and websites designed for making friends, such as Meetup or Bumble BFF. No shame, these are super helpful!

Overcoming Common Obstacles

“B-but…what if I’m nervous?” Great question, and one that most people are still learning the answer to. Here are some tips to make things easier.

  1. Social Anxiety or Shyness: If social situations make you anxious, start small. Focus on one-on-one interactions or small gatherings rather than large events, and bring a close friend to ease the pressure.
  2. Balancing Work and Social Life: Finding time for a social life is tough when you’re juggling a career. Schedule social activities like you would any other important commitment, which feels kinda lame, but we’re serious. Whether it’s grabbing coffee after work or joining a weekend activity, be intentional with your time.
  3. Rejection and Disappointment: Not every social interaction will lead to a lasting friendship, and that’s fine. Rejection stings, but you have to keep putting yourself out there to see improvement and success. Inaction will get you nowhere!

Final Thoughts

Making friends after college is intimidating for most of us, but it’s entirely possible to build up a close circle of adult buddies! By looking for opportunities, actively putting yourself in social situations, and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, you will begin to expand your network. You do need to get your hands dirty, and not every interaction will be a hit, but the fulfillment that comes from having a group to call your own is well worth it.
